“She was my friend.”
A worn-out look Alec Baldwin broke his silence on Saturday, declaring his friendship with Halyna Hutchins – the film photographer, whom he accidentally shot and killed on the set of his film “Rust” last week.
“There are random accidents on movie sets from time to time, but nothing like this,” Baldwin, who looked abandoned and at times sounded hoarse, told a BackGrid reporter as he stood on the side of the road in Vermont with traffic rushing. behind him. “This is an episode of one out of a trillion, one out of a trillion event.”
The comments were Baldwin’s first public since Hutchins was killed during the production of “Rust” in Sante Fe, NM last week. Director Joel Souza was injured during the shooting, in which Baldwin accidentally fired a gun, which he was reportedly “safe”.
Baldwin, in dark trousers and a dark jacket over a gray flannel shirt, talked about what appeared to be a country road with his wife, Hilaria, by his side and filmed the interaction on her cell phone.
“A woman died. She was my friend, she was my friend,” Baldwin said. “When I arrived at Sante Fe to start shooting, I took her to dinner.
“We were a very, very well-oiled team recording a movie together when this horrific event happened.”
At one point, Baldwins admonished a journalist for apparently not knowing Hutchins’ name.
“You do not know her name? Come on,” Baldwin said.
The actor said he welcomes discussions about eliminating guns in Hollywood productions.
“I know well, and the ongoing effort to limit the use of firearms on a set is something I am extremely interested in,” he said.
The actor added that “we are in constant contact” with Hutchins’ husband Matthews. The couple had a 9-year-old son.
“We are very concerned” for her family, Baldwin said, adding that he was “ordered” by Sante Fe’s sheriff’s office not to discuss the matter.
