Boat capsized on Okanagan Lake – Kelowna News

Boat flips on the lake

UPDATE: 9:05 p.m.

A boater who rescued people from the capsized boat says she was in her own boat by the Wibit in front of City Park when she noticed too many people on the second level of the pontoon boat.

That’s when she noticed the driver take a sharp turn, causing the pontoon to flip over and capsize.

She ensured that people on the second level of the boat were not hanging on one side of it, and it was the uneven weight distribution of the boat and the hard turn that caused it to flip.

She and her friend took 11 people to safety, docking at the Marina. That’s when police arrived for questioning.

Earlier this afternoon, police were seen at the downtown Marina in Kelowna questioning a group of boaters after their pontoon capsized in Okanagan Lake.

On scene, there appeared to be at least a dozen people on the dock from the boat as police were looking for the driver responsible for the rental.

A local security guard who was patrolling the dock at the time told Castanet the group of people were all seen hanging off one side of the boat, eventually causing it to flip on its side and capsize.

It appears the boat has now been lifted out of the water by crane.

It doesn’t appear that anyone was hurt.

Castanet has reached out to the RCMP for comment.
