City of Sydney proposes new bike lane designer for Oxford Street

The City of Sydney is proposing new designs for an Oxford Street cycle and footpath improvements to connect cycle routes across Sydney, making it safer for people walking and riding, and to support businesses along the retail and entertainment strip.

The city’s proposed 1.7km of separate cycle path, now open for community consultation, will run the curb between Taylor Square and Castlereagh Street, connecting the city center with the eastern suburbs.

The Oxford and Liverpool Streets cycle path is a critical link in a nine-kilometer cycle route that connects Mascot in the south with Circular Quay in the north, and a 10-kilometer route that connects UNSW in the east and Lilyfield in the inner-west.

It also creates an important six-mile connection between Bondi Junction and Circular Quay and will connect to the state government’s planned bike route between Taylor Square and Centennial Park.

In November 2020, the city consulted on plans for a center with a pop-up bike path on Oxford Street. Following feedback from the local community, the city has drawn up new concept plans for a higher quality permanent two-way cycle path on the north side of Oxford and Liverpool streets.

City of Sydney Access and Transport Manager Sebastian Smyth said the new design would mean safer infrastructure to meet growing demand, noting “Oxford Street is already one of the most used cycle routes in the city with over 2,000 bike rides each Once the separate bike paths are installed, we expect that bike rides will be more than doubled within the first 12 months.

“We listened to the local community and key stakeholders and decided that a permanent bike path was the best option for riders, the local community and future Mardi Gras parades.

“This project is part of our program to make Sydney a safer place for people to walk and ride, give people more opportunities to travel around the city and create inviting streets for residents, visitors and businesses.”

The municipality will conduct a comprehensive month-long community consultation. This follows feedback from key stakeholders including Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney Anzac War Memorial, Woollahra Council and local community and business leaders.

The bike path, jointly funded by the City of Sydney and the NSW Government, has been designed in partnership with Transport for NSW and will help calm vehicle traffic on this important street and enhance the experience for people.

City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone said bike lanes and infrastructure for people walking will support the city’s post-pandemic recovery.

Barone added “since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen an increasing demand for safe and accessible bike paths, and that cycling across age groups is increasing.

“We need to design roads that are safe for people driving to work, schools and universities. We also need to create space for people to walk comfortably and for businesses to open up. This is another step in making Sydney to an even better place for all of us. “

The Oxford Street cycleway is one of a number of important cycle paths planned for the city center, including:

  • The reinstallation of the popular College Street bike path in early 2022
  • King Street bike path connects to Pitt Street bike path and bike routes to the city east and south
  • Upgrading the Pitt Street pop-up to a permanent two-way bike path.

The City of Sydney has recently opened cycle links on Chalmers Street to Prince Alfred Park, Liverpool Street to Darling Harbor and a cycle path along the Saunders and Miller streets of Pyrmont connecting to Anzac Bridge.

These bike paths build on existing important commuter connections along Bourke, Wilson and Kent streets and George Street Redfern-Waterloo.

Outside the city center, planned new cycle connections in Alexandria and Erskineville include:

  • A permanent bike path instead of the pop-up bike path on Henderson Road, Railway Parade and Bridge Street
  • A new bike path on Ashmore and Harley streets between Fox Avenue and McEvoy Street
  • A new bike path on Mitchell Road and Huntley Street between Sydney Park Road and Belmont Street
  • 4 new common paths connecting schools, between Elliott Avenue and Buckland Street.

The city will soon begin building improvements on Gadigal Avenue, Crystal and Potter streets, Waterloo to create a safer connection for people walking and riding on Crystal and Potter streets.
