Colin Kaepernick‘s new Netflix documentary starts with a bang – with a literal comparison between playing for the NFL … being bought and sold into slavery.
The former quarterback, who became an activist, begins the film – titled ‘Colin in Black and White’ – with an explanation of how guys get into the league … and notes that the first step is to try a team that begins with a unite. The camera follows him to a recreated scene, where players go through training and various exercises on the field … while officials watch.

He says potential players are “paraded out” in front of coaches, scouts and owners – who measure their physical talents and abilities on the pitch. CK goes on to say that coaches will tell players that they want their guys to be warriors, killers, beasts and animals online.
What Colin is after … this is coded language that he believes gives a greater power dynamic of slave master and slave – and he makes a visual juxtaposition to hit it.
The screen then jumps to a new scene … where the blackest players who just ran up and down the field now stand on an auction block, shirtless and in chains. You see white masters swap who to buy and trade.
Colin says that teams “stick, plug and examine you” and search for any “defective” – without any dignity or respect for that player. His point is that children who enter this sport may not see it this way – but he certainly insists that they be cared for in a slave system.
It’s a visceral and brave leap to take – and there are MANY reactions … some are for, some against. Of course, Netflix was on board with the messages … they’re the ones broadcasting it this weekend.
