Dune Concept Art by unused Baron Harkonnen Design is even more scary

On his Instagram, concept designer Jerad S. Marantz shares the original design for the dune villain Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, played by Stellan Skarsgård.

The original concept art for Dune the villain Baron Harkonnen looks very different. Dune, which opened in theaters last weekend, is the latest adaptation of the legendary Frank Herbert science fiction novel of the same name. The extensive epic about the young son of a noble house who learns to face his pain while the uprising occurs on the desert planet Arrakis, with Timothée Chalamet, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa and Zendaya in the lead roles, along with Rebecca Ferguson.

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is played by the Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård. The character uses a series of suspender belts to lift gravity and allow him to float. The Baron is the former steward of Arrakis, who secretly pulls the strings in an attempt to end House Atreides, to which the film’s heroes belong. Although this is not revealed in the first film, he is also the father of Ferguson’s Lady Jessica, mother of Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. Baron Harkonnen is also the master of a spooky pet that no one seems to be able to correctly identify.

On his Instagram, concept artist Jerad S.Marantz shared the original design. Marantz, who has also worked on major MCU projects such as Avengers: Endgame and the future Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as creating monsters for horror projects like Bye Bye Man and Lovecraft Country, has combined his abilities for popcorn film acting and horror film threat in this design. In the picture, Harkonnen towers over his throne, an impossibly high and wide presence that overwhelms the surroundings like Supreme Leader Snoke in The last Jedi. Check out the post below:

This design is solely of the character’s body before costume designers Kurt and Bart put their hands on it, which explains his lack of clothing. In the final product, they ended up choosing a black tunic with a series of buttons in the middle. This costume stands out by highlighting the sheer height of the redesigned character.

Dune has certainly found a way in which the Baron can be a credible threat, even with the current design for the character. There are many ways to Klit 2, which was recently green lit, to harness his character and harness the powerful energy he displays in these original designs. The character is one of the most interesting and layered in Dune universe, and it will be interesting to see how the next film brings the rest of the story to life.
