Firefighters respond to major fire in downtown Montreal

MONTREAL – Montreal firefighters responded to a large fire overnight in an abandoned commercial building in the center.

Authorities issued their first announcement of a “first-alert” fire at Sainte-Catherine W St. and McGill College Av. around 23.40 Saturday.

This rating was soon updated to a “fourth-alarm” fire around 2 p.m., requiring about 105 firefighters and 31 vehicles.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and the case has been handed over to the Montreal police.

Large flames and smoke were visible from blocks away. The fire started next to Montreal’s iconic, and now also vacant, “Super Sexe” club, which suffered some damage.

There were no reported injuries.

Firefighters were on scene Sunday morning to make sure the fire was extinguished forever. Officials are asking people to avoid the area.
