Games to Play If You Like Shadowrun

The Shadowrun trilogy of games have become a cult classic with players everywhere, offering the chance to immerse yourself in a dystopian cyberpunk world.

Combining action with fantasy and magic, Shadowrun is set in a dark and violent future where anything is possible – both good and bad.

If you’ve played your way through all three games, there’s lots of other online entertainment available for players, from MMORPG’s through to themed slot machines – just check out a few of the slot reviews here. But if you’re looking for something that’s more like Shadowrun, take a look at the titles below.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

If the fantasy element of Shadowrun really appealed to you, then Fire Emblem: Three Houses could be a good substitute. It may seem to be quite a different type of game at first glance, but there are more similarities than is first apparent.

You’ll notice there are dragons in Three Houses, just like Shadowrun, but the overall fantasy content is much greater. But turn-based strategy with strong tactical skills is also required, as battles leave the bodies lying in the dust. Think of Shadowrun with even more magic, and you’ll get the idea.

If you could bring the Bladerunner franchise into the gaming world and add a little more spice, Cloudpunk is what you’d end up with. In a game that leans heavily on the dystopian genre, there’s plenty of dark and dismal rain lit up with bright neon lights of the city.

And this is where the gameplay is based, accompanied by full voice acting. Lots of humour takes the edge off, offering a nice contrast to the gritty gameplay. Start making deliveries in your hovercar, and you’ll soon be immersed in the action, including corporate androids, crumbling towers and destruction in every direction. Oh, and a detective android who likes to talk about himself in the third person…

Wasteland 3

Shadowrun is based in the built-up cities in Hong Kong, plus Seattle and Berlin – but imagine that it wasn’t. If you can picture Shadowrun in an entirely different type of location, Wasteland 3 would be pretty close to what you’d get.

Set in the post-apocalyptic world of Colorado, you’ll be battling against insectoid robots, marauders and wastrels who are set on claiming everything for their own. You’ll need your wits about you to craft improvised armour while setting up deals with warlords and fighting for every scrap.

Scavenge everything you can while trying to stay alive in this RPG strategy game, and maybe you might just bring a little lawlessness to the dystopian hell-hole.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is what games in this genre should be all about, and it stands right at the top of its field. Although there are clearly some significant differences compared to Shadowrun, there’s also plenty of overlap.

Your ghouls, vampires and other ethereal creatures will find themselves right at home in Rivellon, but it’s not all fantasy and light. You’ll start the game with nothing but what you’re standing up in, and you’ll have tough choices to make – and of course, monsters to slay.
