Firefighters were attacked by a gang of about 20 yobs while putting out garbage can fires in Fazakerley.

Firefighters responding to incidents across the region this evening have had fireworks and eggs thrown at them in a night known on Merseyside as Mischief night.

The Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said it has responded to 56 emergency calls so far this evening, including 11 deliberate fires involving trash cans, trash and bonfires.

Around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to five garbage can fires on Longmoor Lane in Fazakerley.

As crews tried to put out the fires, a gang of about 20 yobs fired fireworks at them and at members of the public.

In another incident on Haswell Drive in Stockbridge Village, a firefighter threw eggs at him.

The Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said its staff has been physically and verbally attacked five times this week alone.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incidents, but the fire brigade has beaten the perpetrators behind the attacks.

In a statement on Twitter, a spokesman said: “Firefighters, lawyers and all firefighters are NOT targets. It is not ‘a laugh’ to throw objects such as fireworks, bricks and eggs at them while performing their duties.

“They sort people with families and loved ones waiting for them at home. They are members of your community.

“They go out every day and night, 24/7, 365 days a year to protect the people of Merseyside.

“Throughout the pandemic, in addition to performing their daily tasks, they have provided prescriptions, packed lunches and given vaccinations.

“They go beyond that every single day. They are there for you, your friends, your family when they need it most – is that the thank you they deserve?

They continued: “We’re not trying to ruin anyone’s fun – we’re trying to keep you safe. It’s not okay to deliberately set fire to rubbish bins and rubbish.

“Verbal and physical assault on emergency personnel is not ok. It is punishable.

“This time of year is extremely busy for us and for all emergency services. Do not make it worse.”
