La Mama jumps to life with four upcoming La Mamica events

Carlton’s beloved La Mama Theater is set to end 2021 with a bang and announces four upcoming events across Lygon Street and Brunswick.

The La Mama Theatre’s quarterly La Mamica program once again brings a series of events to its famous court scene, in addition to a special Indonesian video series at Brunswick’s Tempo Rubato in December.

The theater describes their new series as a sisterhood of events focusing on unique art forms, with La Mamica curators carefully selecting the four events below in November and December.

Cabaretics: November

Friday, November 12 at 20.30 at La Mama Courthouse

Do you remember the live performance? As Melbourne opens and the UN Climate Conference (COP26) draws to a close, November Cabaretica artists throw their loving arms around you and our precious planet to show how much they care.

Bradley Storer and Thabani Tshuma shape the gravel into a pearl of hope and prepare the way for some divine visits. We can not wait to welcome you back to the Courthouse with a laugh and a free glass of bubbles. This event is presented in collaboration with CLIMARTE and ClimActs. Curated by Susan Bamford Caleo & Isabel Knight.

Music: WOT?

Monday, December 13 at 19.30 at La Mama Courthouse

Deafinitely Flat creates transformative listening experiences. Feel the sounds. Listen to vibrations. Transform how you experience music with Carmen Robertson and Deafinitely Flat. Discover new ways to listen and awaken improved perception throughout your body.

How does an octave feel? Can you feel the drums through your feet?

Being born deaf never prevented Carmen from becoming a performer, composer and teacher, and she is here to share her unique perspective on how everyone can use their senses differently to get more enjoyment from music. Curated by Gemma Horbury.

Poetica: The Heirs

Tuesday, December 14 at 19.30 at La Mama Courthouse

A book launch for La Mama Poetica curator Amanda Anastasi’s new poetry book The Inheritors.

Amanda Anastasi, current Poet in Residence at the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub and convener of La Mama Poetica, launches her book The Inheritors (Black Pepper Publishing, 2021). This event will feature readings from special guest poets and readings from the new collection.

“A daring, hypnotic collection. Anastasi weaves its way through these fresh, brave worlds with quiet strength and careful, exquisite control. A vital and most necessary book from one of our finest.” – Ian McBryde

Kinematics: VOD milk: In the meat

Sunday, December 19 at 19.30 and Tempo Rubato

During the lockdown in 2020, the film collective Dogmilk found a way to continue engaging with collaborators in Indonesia and allow new filmmakers and video artists to exhibit works without the capacity to assemble and show live.

VOD milk was the solution; an online platform for thoughtful movies, video art and everything in between that offers a new program from a different programmer every fortnight. Each work would be translated into both Indonesian and English to be available to both audiences. This selection represents a diverse cross-section of some of the works that appeared on VODmilk. Curated by Tessa Spooner.

La Mama Theater also has a brilliant array of performances planned for the next two months, go to their ‘What’s On’ section here to find out more.
