Maddox Tavern is a Mayfair British brasserie, taking over the old Browns site

A Hot Dinners exclusive

Taking over the Mayfair site that was once Browns, a new British brasserie is coming to Maddox Street in the shape of Maddox Tavern.

It’s from Roger Payne’s Enhanced Hospitality group, who are also behind Camden’s Shaka Zulu, Black’s Club, 26 Leake Street and lots more. In the kitchen is head chef Jon Grimes, previously at Kobe Jones in Bromley and Aqua Kyoto before that. Here in Mayfair, the menu will be one of “elevated British classics” with a contemporary feel. In the main restaurant that’ll translate to dishes like:

  • Bosworth Ash goat’s cheese with grilled artichokes
  • Venison carpaccio with pineapple chutney
  • Maddox fish pie with gratinated mustard mash
  • Dark chocolate tart, burnt caramelised banana, honeycomb

On top of that, expect a big shellfish section, various steak cuts (with all the meat being sourced from Huntham Court Farm in Hereford) and more. They’ll be open at breakfast too with their Full English (of course) as well as a lobster Benedict, soufflé omelette and a Benedict waffle.

There’s a separate bar area – and that’ll have its own menu. There you’ll be able to get a steak sandwich, fish and chips, wagyu sliders and bar snacks like prawn popcorn or mature cheddar croquettes.

The history of the site goes back a fair bit. It’s a 19th-century listed building that was once Cooling Lawrence & Sons gentlemen’s outfitters (which happened to have Winston Churchill as a client). The building has been completely restored – expect plenty of mahogany as well as a Versailles parquet flooring.

The Browns site was a popular spot – so it’ll be interesting to see what this new group have done with the place.
