Margaret Hawke charged with murder of three children

The mother of three children killed during a Port Hedland house fire has been charged with their murders.

Margaret Hawke, 36, fronted Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning over the allegations, as well as one count of criminal damage by fire.

Wearing a ripped jumper and a mask, Hawke glanced briefly at family members in the public gallery before listening as the magistrate read out the four charges against her.

With her arms crossed, she nodded as each charge was read and was remanded in custody until August 31.

Hawke’s three children, aged five months, and seven and 10 years, were killed in the Pilbara house fire on July 19.

Neighbours said Hawke emerged from the house around 4.45pm and asked for an ambulance to be called. Firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Following a forensic examination of the property, the children’s bodies were taken from the Anderson Street house on Thursday for postmortems to determine their cause of death.

Hawke was transferred from a Port Hedland hospital to Perth on Friday for specialist treatment.
