MTV VMA 2022 nominations: Kendrick Lamar, Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow lead

Kendrick Lamar, Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow are leading the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) nominations, which were announced on Tuesday, with seven nominations each.

Harlow and Lil Nas X both earned multiple nods for their No. 1 hit collaboration Industry Baby, while Lamar is nominated for the first time since 2018.

They are followed by Doja Cat and Harry Styles with six each, while Aussie rapper The Kid LAROI scored three nods for his collaboration with Justin Bieber on the single Stay. Their song was also nominated as a Song of Summer at last year’s VMAs.

Other artists who are nominated this year include Billie Eilish, Drake, Elton John, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd.

Madonna, who is the most-awarded artist in MTV history with 20 wins, becomes the only artist to be nominated in each of the VMAs’ five decades (1980s-2020s), as she earns her 69th nomination for Madame X.

There are a total of 26 first-time nominees this year, including Baby Keem with four and Gayle, Kacey Musgraves and Eurovision 2021 winners Måneskin with two each.

Anitta, Becky G, Dove Cameron, Karol G, Itzy, Jid, Muni Long, Tems, Wet Leg and more have also made their nomination debut.

Fans can vote for their favourite stars across 22 gender-neutral categories, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration and two all-new categories: Best Long-form Video and Best Metaverse Performance.

Nominations for social categories including Group of the Year and Song of Summer will be announced at a later date.

This year’s VMAs will take place in New Jersey on Sunday, August 28 (Monday, August 29 AEST) at the Prudential Center in Newark.
