Wales’s Prime Minister has expressed concern that a new vaccine-resistant COVID-19 variant will soon appear, Sky News reports.
Mark Drakeford, the prime minister, said COVID-19 cases will continue to rise and that he is “almost certain” that a new variant will rise in the UK.
- “There is at least a possibility that that variant will prove to be more resistant to vaccination than the current one we have,” he said.
There is already a COVID-19 variant that is spreading across the UK.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the AY.4.2 variant has also found its way to the United States. She said there is no major cause for panic yet, but the CDC will monitor for potential clusters.
Francois Balloux, Director of University College London Genetics Institute, tweeted Saturday that the AY.4.2 variant could also be 10% more transmissible than the current delta variant.
- “As such, it feels worth keeping an eye on,” he said.
That said, researchers in Germany warned that an older COVID-19 variant – called the A.30 variant – could also avoid the Pfizer and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines. However, the variant has not existed for several months.
