LOYALTY to bosses influenced jockey apprentice Teo Nugent’s decision to take a Floating Artist tour for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace at Tuesday’s $ 8 million Melbourne Cup in Flemington. Nugent, who is in the final year of his apprenticeship with Maher and Eustace, toppled the mountain at the Chris Waller-trained Great House in favor of Floating Artist. The former Warrnambool Brauer College student said he was excited to fulfill his dream of getting a ride in the ‘race that stops the nation’. “I’m pinching myself, I’ve got my first trip to the Melbourne Cup,” he told The Standard. “It’s been a couple of great weeks for me on the back of my first Caulfield Cup trip.” Every jockey dreams of getting a trip to the Melbourne Cup and I got my chance on Tuesday. “It’s weird at one point that I got the offer of three rides in the cup because I can ride so easily, and then it came down to two – Floating Artist and Great House.” It was my decision to ride Floating Artist, and I did it after Great House won Lexus last Saturday. “Ciaron and David have been sensational bosses to me. I just thought I would pay them back for the faith they have shown me since I started apprenticeship with them in 2017.” The 23-year-old, who rode Floating Artist into second place in last week’s Moonee Valley Cup, revealed that his partner Claira and father John will be among the 10,000 racers who will be on the track to see him ride on the imported gallop. “Floating artist had no luck in the Moonee Valley Cup,” he said. “I was just a victim of the circumstances. It was a very good race by Floating Artist.” He is fit and ready to run a big race in the Melbourne Cup. I just hope to have some luck in the race as it always needs it to win races. “Floating Artist is rated for a $ 16 chance at the early betting markets for the Melbourne Cup. The Peter Moody-trained Incentivize is the hottest favorite , with odds of $ 2.30 for a straight win. Warrnambool coach Symon Wilde will saddle up Tralee Rose.
