Owner of Very Best Little Hair House is publishing a book that aims to change the stigma of hair loss

SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) – Losing hair is something many people struggle with, but a woman in Sharon does her part to reduce the stigma behind hair loss.

Debra Heim owns Very Best Little HairHouse in Sharon center. She recently published a book about her own experience with wigs and what people wearing alternative hair for the first time should know.

Those who walk into her store are immediately immersed in the wig shopping experience.

Heim opened the store after her own struggles with hair loss. She said the process can be stressful for people, but education is important when it comes to wearing alternative hair.

She remembers the first time she noticed her thinner hair.

“I was horrified. I was horrified,” she said.

This is not a unique feeling among those with hair loss, so Heim would like to make sure that first-time users of alternative hair are educated.

“When you do not know what you are buying, you are wasting money,” Heim said.

Her book, titled “Too Much Hair,” has an ironic name, but Heim says it fits perfectly.

“The first thing you think of when you look in a mirror when you’re wearing a wig is, ‘Oh no it’s too much hair.’ What everyone with hair loss says when they sit down is: ‘ Well, I do not want too much hair ‘, said Heim.

She said people just get used to the look of thinner hair on the head so it looks too much like at first glance.

Heim writes about her experience as a first-time wig user and what she wished she had known.

“It didn’t have to be as difficult as it was while I was going along,” she said. “If I had just had someone help me and tell me what I was telling the women coming in here, it would have been easier and so much faster.”

She wants to destigmatize wearing alternative hair.

“Why do we feel ashamed? There is no shame in that,” Heim said.

Her book can be found on Amazon or on the Very Best Little Hair House website.
