New Covid-19 case numbers in the U.S. are close to levels recorded near this time last year, with a seven-day average of about 72,000 a day, data from Johns Hopkins University shows. But the course is the opposite. Last fall, the number of cases increased, while hospitalizations and deaths, subsequent indicators, began to follow.
