Authorities in northern Virginia were on high alert following an ISIS threat to malls and malls outside the U.S. capital this weekend.
Police increased their presence through Halloween leading up to election day, according to CBS News.
“We have increased our police presence throughout the county to include major thoroughfares, transit hubs, shopping malls and malls,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said Friday.
A federal intelligence chief said this week that the terrorist group is pressuring lone wolves to attack targets without support, the article said.
“Right now, we are seeing a dramatic increase – or an increase – in the online activity of media operations linked to various al Qaeda elements and Islamic State,” said John Cohen, head of intelligence for the Department of Homeland Security, according to the network.
“It’s just our responsibility to have a larger presence, to be more aware and to ask society to have their eyes and ears peeled for suspicious activities,” Davis said reportedly in the wake of accelerated threats.
