The stunned neighborhood of Manchester was horrified when a man’s body was found in the canal

A neighborhood in north Manchester has been talking about their shock after they woke up to a real horror scene this morning.

As people went about their business on what appeared to be a normal Sunday, police and firefighters moved down Old Church Street in Newton Heath.

It is believed that a body had been found by people fishing in the Rochdale Canal.

Police confirmed that a man was pronounced dead at the scene, just meters from a busy main street.

A tent was set up on the canal’s towpath, and residents watched in horror as forensic scientists fine-tuned the site for tracks.

Stephen Roscoe said he saw three fire trucks and ‘about ten police cars’ coming down the scene around 10.10am.

“There were lots of them and divers too,” he said.

“I knew right away that there would be someone in the water. There have been past incidents here.

“It’s awful.”

Leanne Tighe, who lives in a residential area near the site, said she was “shocked” when she found out someone was dead.

“When I saw the police, I thought someone might have been attacked, but then I saw the tent,” she said.

“One does not expect to see that kind of thing.

“I have lived here for 13 years. We get some problems, but nothing that does not happen in other areas.”

Residents told of their shock after the discovery Sunday morning

Detectives have launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the man’s death.

Officers remained at the scene, close to the Newton Heath Library, all Sunday.

Several entrances to the towpath were taped off as police officers kept watch.

In a statement, the GMP said: “Around 10.10am this morning (October 31), police were called to a report of concern for a man’s welfare in the water near Old Church Street in Manchester.

“Police and GMFRS responded and a man was unfortunately confirmed dead on the spot.

– There are ongoing investigations to identify the man and the circumstances behind the incident.

“The officers remain on site.

“Anyone with information should contact the police online, if possible, or via 101 stating incident 1334 of 31/10/2021.”
