The Weather Network – PHOTOS: Destructive storms bring down trees, damage homes in Ontario

Severe thunderstorms raced across parts of southern and eastern Ontario Sunday evening, resulting in numerous tornado warnings and a number of reports of wind damage and power outages. The earlier daytime heat was opportune for the cold front to build energy that sparked severe storms, including supercells in some areas.

Tornado warnings were issued for areas around Frontenac Provincial Park north of Kingston, later expanding to communities like Gananoque and Brockville as the storms pushed eastwards.

According to police officials, the powerful storm caused major damage in the area around Highway 7, near the communities of Tweed, Madoc and Marmora. There were reports that a tornado occurred in the vicinity of Marmora, Madoc and Actinolite.

OPP acting Sgt. Erin Cranton told CBC News Sunday night that there were reports of “significant” damage to homes and properties, along with trees down and power poles toppled. As of late Sunday night, there were no reports of any injuries or fatalities, Cranton said. The overnight closures of Highways 7 and 37 ended just before 7 a.m. on Monday morning.

At the height of the storm Hydro One reported that over 30,000 customers were without power across Ontario late Sunday night, down to about 4,500, mostly around Tweed by early Monday morning.

The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) sent teams to these locations Monday to survey the damage.

On Monday, ECCC released a summary containing the locations of where the most significant damage was reported.

Rockdale: Flipped trailer and multiple injuries

Marmora: Homes damaged and downed trees

Actinolite (north of Tweed): Homes damaged and roofs removed

Tweed: Damage to homes and trees, Highway 7 blocked by downed large tree

Madoc: Downed hydro lines and downed trees
