Police say a 2-year-old Staten Island girl died Friday afternoon after she was fatally hit by an SUV leaving a grocery parking lot.
Officers responded to the Stop and Shop on Forest Avenue near Veltman Avenue shortly before noon.
EMS was first on the scene and provided assistance to the 2-year-old girl when police officers arrived, according to the NYPD.
Investigators determined the 69-year-old woman behind the wheel of a Ford Explorer tried to leave the parking lot as the girl jumped out in front of the SUV.
The driver drove over the small child, who was declared dead shortly afterwards, and remained at the scene through the police investigation.
The 2-year-old girl was identified as the fall garrison.
There were no immediate arrests or announcements of criminal charges.
The NYPD’s Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad is working on the incident.
