Trumps Social Media Venture given 30 days to stop violating software license

Donald Trump’s Truth Social Media venture has been given a 30-day deadline to stop violating the license for the code base program, which the former president’s operation apparently revoked.

“We sent a formal letter to Truth Social’s legal director requesting that the source code be made publicly available in accordance with the license,” said a statement from the developers of open source software Mastodon.

“So-called” Truth Social has “30 days to comply, or the license can be revoked permanently” on November 26, the statement said. Trump’s company was warned Wednesday.

In an excavation by the former president, the statement also noted: “Of course, we would prefer that people who were so opposed to our values did not use and benefit from our work. But the reality of working with free software is that you give up the opportunity to choose who can and cannot use it from the start. ”

Trump’s venture has not yet officially launched, but an initial version already online appears to be using the Mastodon software, which the startup has declared to be part of a “proprietary” company – which it is not. Using the word “proprietary” is “worrying,” the Mastodon statement noted.

Mastodon’s developers are dedicated to community ownership and public accessibility.

“Social networking, back in your hands,” says Mastodon’s website. “Publish whatever you want: links, images, text, video. All on a community-owned, ad-free platform.”

The underlying code can be used by anyone – provided users comply with Mastodon’s licensing requirements. Its AGPLv3 license (an abbreviation of Affero General Public License, version 3) requires that Mastodon’s source code and any changes be made available to the public by anyone who uses it.

“In particular, neither [Truth Social’s] terms [of service] nor did any other part of the website contain any references to Mastodon, nor any links to the source code, which are present in Mastodon’s user interface by default, ”the Mastodon statement noted.

Truth Social did not respond to a request for comment from HuffPost.
