“We need to recognise the benefit of animals” Canberran with a disability says there’s a gap in available support for pet owners

The benefits of pet ownership isn’t hard to understand.

They help to keep us active, provide companionship, and are great mood boosters!

But what happens to our pets as we age? If we fall ill, who can we rely upon to look after them?

A Pets in Aged Care study conducted in 2017 by the Animal Welfare League showed only 9% of community care providers say they provide pet friendly in home care services.

Canberra local Mel Bayley is the owner and operator of Furry Favours. She is trying her hardest to assist people in their pet ownership desire as they face the challenges of disability and age.

One of her clients, Debbie Pragt, lives with MS and is scooter bound. Debbie’s two spoodles Cooper and Lily are the light in her life.

They spoke to ABC Radio Canberra about the importance of pet ownership for the vulnerable and elderly in our community and the gap in support for those pet owners.
